Stereochemistry

Stereochemistry is a study about the shape of the molecule in space.   Stereochemistry tutorials will help you understand in 3D from 2D and understand the concepts of core of lessons.

Video 1: Fischer projection and rotation - determine what's the mirror image and how to determine if they are the same compound by rotating the paper.

¡@

Be Aware! - When rotating the Fischer Projection vertically, the whole molecule will rotate along the horizontal! Not just the two from the top group and bottom groups. The left row one and row two has to be rotated as the vertical line is turn.

For R and S. If hydrogen is place on the horizontal, the rule is opposite from the general rule (in 3d dash and wedge.) For Fischer when hydrogen is in horizontal, R is counterclockwise.  However, if hydrogen is on the vertical side, then R is clockwise. Mostly the exam is given you H on the horizontal.

Video 2: Fischer Projection and Wedge-Dash molecule. How to look at the paper molecule and imagine 3D Fischer.

¡@

Confusing part of this type of questions are to imagine. Professors need to let students know we can imagine these rotation. First thing is to know how they are deteremined drawing wedge and dash, there are rules so we can easily see. I used to see them all the same and cannot tell what's difference - it is because I never saw a 3D molecule and not to say turning them around. I only hope they will not be on the exam and luckily it were not. However, not all people are that luckily.

Video 3: Are these rings enantom er or identical compound? When we turn, are they the same?

¡@

They are not the same. When we see a ring, sometimes there is an internal plane that we miss. ( It is explained more in the ebook ) It is to know how to find the asymmetric carbon and see if the attached are the same on different side. The rings can be a little confused to look at because of cis and trans position. I will not conclude that all trans is chiral or all cis are achiral. It is simply we all found the exception in one way or the other.
